IS BOWEN FOR YOU?

We all know how it feels to be out of sorts - whether it's due to a physical injury, tiredness, stress or health problems.  So how many of us simply put up with not being 100%, blaming our lethargy, aches and pains on an old injury or stress?  If this sounds like you, then the Bowen Technique is a therapy worth investigating.

My pleasant and comfortable treatment room is based at my home in Chesham in Buckinghamshire where you will be assured complete privacy and confidentiality.

What to expect when attending your first Bowen treatment

The Bowen Technique is a gentle, subtle and relaxing hands-on treatment which can relieve stress and/or help relaxation.  Bowen is not a massage, chiropractic or osteopathic treatment and it is suitable for adults, children - including babies - and the elderly.

Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person and encourages re-alignment of the body. The Bowen moves or procedures are carried out on the client's body by applying the thumbs or fingers in precise, rolling type moves over muscles and soft tissue interspersed with periods of rest which awakens the body's resources to auto-regulate, naturally heal and and protect itself. There is no manipulation of hard tissue and no force is used or needed to bring relief of stress and tension.

The first session | The breaks | Will it hurt? | How many treatments do I need? | Mixing Bowen with other therapies

The first session will last approximately an hour and will comprise a detailed consultation followed by a Bowen treatment on a wide treatment couch.  Removal of clothing is always optional and it is advisable to wear lightweight clothing - jeans, for example, are difficult to work through.

There are a series of short breaks during each treatment where the therapist WILL LEAVE THE ROOM to allow the patient to rest.  Far from being a passive action, it is actually allowing the Bowen work to start to take effect.  It also ensures the therapist is not simply using a set of predetermined procedures but is actually working according to the physical changes that may take place, and the breaks allow the therapist a space from which to make effective comparisons.

The treatment itself causes no discomfort but if you are injured or suffering painful arthritis for example then some discomfort may be felt.  The practitioner will always ensure you are made as comfortable as possible.  Patient comfort is the first rule of Bowen Therapy.

Four or five treatments are generally required depending on how long the symptoms have been present and many patients choose to continue after the initial treatments with monthly or six weekly "top-ups".

Treatments are spaced 5-10 days apart and most people find they leave feeling the same as when they arrived.  However, flu-like symptoms, aches, pains may occur but will settle down usually before the next treatment.

Other therapies, e.g. reflexology, massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic should not be undertaken whilst having Bowen Therapy.  However, homoeopathy and Bach & Busch Flowers work well with Bowen.
